Welcome to Brisbane Stickfighting

long and short stick

Brisbane Stick fighting is a regular gathering of martial art practitioners interested in developing their stick fighting ability within a safe informal atmosphere.

The current group is made up of a guys from different backgrounds each bringing their own different abilities and experiences into the sparing, with a variety of ages, nationalities and styles, the differences in fighting styles has proven to bring more out of us.

We have previously discovered sparring with the same opponent over time can become predictable as each players learns instinctively the other players patterns of motions or tells. By bringing in new sparring partners we seek to avoid falling into the same old patterns, so that we can learn to flow or break the flow of our opponent, overcoming them no matter their size, strength or fighting ability.

Our goal with the sparring is to test ourselves under pressure in single stick, double stick and knife.

Safety comes first with regard to this, with minimum safety requirement of gloves and helmet with face protection when sparring and for the knife element we spar in the style of Ray Floro's Knife System using padded stick.

With the single and double stick sparring we have experimented with padded sticks and similar items but have found that real sticks last longer. There is never any pressure to take this step, as our group does have members who do not participate in the sparring.

With different influences attracting each of our personalities Brisbane Stick fighting has been open to all martial arts and is a place where beginners and more experienced practitioners may get together to practice and share their ideas in a friendly and non-competitive environment.

Our current members have different reasons for being part of this unique group but one thing is for certain we all enjoy these get togethers.

As most groups we do have our restrictions. The minimum requirements are simple:

    You must be over 18
    Know your limitations
    Leave your ego at home
    Be accepting of others
